Hats and sacks

Happy holidays!

After weeks of denial I've finally accepted that holidays are indeed coming (you just can't argue with the Coca Cola advert), and what better way to get into the festive spirit than to spend some time in Santa's grotto. My second day into my internship at a local lifestyle magazine and I'm landed with the prestigious duty of interviewing Sally the elf for the Christmas edition of the magazine, so I trundled along to the not-so-glamorous Merrion Centre and among an array of fake snow and oversized cuddly toys we got to talking. I was told to treat it as a fashion-orientated piece so, rather than asking the usual questions, (How does the weather compare to Lapland? Does Santa ever get a bit frisky? Is Will Ferrell your idol?) I concentrated on what Sally and her elf-mate Anna had to say about there outfits. After quizzing these amicable ladies on their styling we came to the conclusion that Anna opted for a traditional look where as Sally's was more 'vintage chic'. Who knew Elf dressing could be so diverse?

Other excursions saw me dropping in on a rather scary looking rugby player who had found his calling in life encouraging men to fall down the metrosexual rabbit hole. His all-boys-club salon (and Apothecary, apparently) is there for the men who wish to pencil weekly facials in their leather bound diaries and have their hair coiffed not cut. He was keen to inform me that there is nothing their customers love more than a good BSC (that's a back, sack and crack wax for those of us who are clued up on male grooming acronyms). Apparently the rugby lads absolutely love it... Well they do spend the majority of their time getting sweaty with other men, so a little preening does seem to fit the bill.

Needless to say I'm finding the week useful. I'm grateful when a publication actually gives you some responsibility other than tea making or post delivering. The good thing about smaller publications is that they're usually extremely low on staff, so any hands on help they can get is welcomed and appreciated. One more day to go before the end of week one and one thing is clear... I've learnt far too much about sacks this week, Santa's and otherwise.
